TPLF have informed Egyptian “if EPRDF returns to power the dam will be jointly owned”

May 2020

TPLF representatives have informed Egyptians that if the old EPRDF returns to power before the GERD dam water filling is completed, they will consider the dam to be jointly owned by Egypt and Ethiopia, a source tells.

Cairo viewed the new plea by Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front (TPLF) as a positive step toward putting their hands on one of Africa’s largest infrastructure projects: the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), despite its earlier sharp criticism of it.

Cairo has told TPLF representatives that they will clarify their position soon regarding co-ownership and method of operating the dam, and how to fill it with water in times of flood and drought.

The secret meeting was held in Cairo in mid-March this year by agents of TPLF residing abroad, the source added.

TPLF is gearing up for confrontation with the Ethiopian Federal Government and openly resisted yesterday (pictured) the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) by deciding to conduct a general election in Tigray State in August, a month after the filling of the water starts.

The source tells, Mekelle is “banking on war” between Egypt and Ethiopia, and has “hedged against Ethiopia by investing all on Cairo” as Egypt threatened to bomb the dam and go to war if Ethiopia starts filling the water in July.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed this week said that “Bandas” – without specifying names - were “secretly speaking and siding with Egyptians” to disrupt democracy and development, but the culprits are understood to be TPLF, as well as others.D for Addis - EXCLUSIVE
