Our Tutor Initial Assessment
There is no set way to run an initial session with a student. We use a formal assessment with a combination of different activities to assess what a student knows and what gaps they have in their knowledge. We have our own way finding out their gaps and what works for the students.
Here we have lots of resources (twinkle and CGP books) that can be used in an initial assessment for a year 6 student when we tutoring them for maths or English.
For example.... on fractions or Tim enables
Fraction
If we would like to use a formal assessment method to assess understanding of fractions, we use baseline assessments and ready-to-progress criteria are a good way to ensure there are no gaps in previous knowledge, and to check what areas of fractions are secure with. It also allow us to assess a year 6 ability student’s knowledge against National Curriculum statements.
Time tables
To formally assess times tables in your year 6 ability students, we use a short assessment paper will allow us to identify any times tables they find challenging.
If a student is coming to us specifically for KS2 SATs support, we initially start with finding gaps in knowledge in order to then help student build up confidence as their SATs approach.
